Thoughtful Gift Ideas for Older Adults

Most people have accumulated a lot of “stuff” by the time they retire. With full shelves and overflowing closets, retirees are more likely to downsize than to try and accrue more material goods. This can make it challenging for family members to come up with gift giving ideas. Here are a few ideas.
Gift cards are one solution. Many grocery stores or big box stores offer gift cards for a myriad of other businesses. Gift cards for a favorite restaurant, movie theater, department store, or even for airline miles can be much appreciated, and ensure that the recipient will get something that they will enjoy. Make sure the card comes from a business that is in a convenient location for your loved one to frequent.
Gift certificates for services might also be appreciated. Would Mom enjoy a relaxing massage or pedicure? Perhaps Dad might enjoy a few lessons with the golf pro. Are there other hobbies that they would enjoy—perhaps oil painting or ballroom dance lessons—if they were given a gift certificate to get them started?
Another meaningful alternative is to give a contribution to an organization or cause in honor of your loved one. The organization will send a card to your family member acknowledging that you gave a gift in their honor. As long as the cause is dear to their heart, the gift will be appreciated and will make a difference.
For most senior adults, the main thing is that their loved ones take the time to think of them. Meaningful greeting cards, a well-timed visit, frequent phone calls or emails often mean as much as the most costly gift. If you pair some meaningful form of communication with an equally thoughtful gift, your older loved ones are sure to understand the special place they hold in your heart.
