Exploring Other Cultures
From A Dining Room Chair

What makes living at Advent Christian Village so special? Among the many reasons would be the special events offered there. For example, ACV began offering evening dining events at Rumph Dining Room once a month as a fun way to go “out on the town” without leaving Dowling Park. Through décor, music and cuisine, Village residents and guests are transported to other times and places. Occasionally, the focus is a worthy cause, such as with the Earth Day event.
With an eye to detail Director of Dining Services Cliff Burr creates the setting for each event, and depending on the theme, guests may find a jukebox, farm implements, a fountain—even live parrots in the dining room. He meticulously plans the menu offering typical favorites from the event’s featured setting. For example, at the 50’s diner, the menu featured cheeseburgers, fries and ice cream sodas; while the tropical island dinner featured roast suckling pig, exotic fruit and virgin pina coladas. Each event offers family-style dining—not long buffet lines, and costs less than restaurant dining.
During the evening, Cliff or a featured guest presents information about the culture, time or cause, usually while the crowd enjoys an appetizer. Guests are encouraged to dress according to the theme, and to participate, whether it is dancing the Jitterbug at the 1950s night, or churning butter and shelling peas at the “Down on the Farm” evening.
By the end of each event, guests have enjoyed so much more than a meal; they have explored the sights, sounds, customs and tastes of other cultures with their friends and neighbors. The events are generally open to the public, with tickets going on sale 2 weeks prior. For more information, call Cliff Burr at 386-658-5260.
