DOWLING PARK, FL—After 36 years of service
to Advent Christian Village, the last 12 as its President and CEO, James L. (Jim) Humbles is retiring, effective August 31, 2008.
Jim, his wife, Rosemary and young daughter Keri came to ACV in 1972, when he accepted the position as Director of Children’s Services.
Rosemary soon got involved in music at the Village Church, where she continues as Minister of Music and Christian Education. Jim’s competency in administration earned him several promotions through the years, and he served as Vice President for Health and Retirement Services, First Vice President, Senior Vice President and Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, before being appointed by the ACV Board of Directors as President and CEO in 1996. Since that time, he has faithfully led a team of 490 staff members, serving the interests of the 800+ residents of Advent Christian Village.
Jim’s credo has been “Never be satisfied; keep striving for improvement.” It is a credo that served him well, as he brought many innovative programs and services to ACV. During his 36 years of leadership, both the physical landscape of the Village, as well as the landscape of services at ACV has changed dramatically. Jim would be quick to point out that he was only one of a team that accomplished the many advances that have occurred at ACV, which reveals another of his endearing qualities—his complete humility. In fact, it is possible to miss Jim’s many accomplishments, his aptitude and his determination to make the world a better place, because of his quiet manner.
When you consider the facilities that were constructed or renovated during his tenure as President and CEO, however, you can quickly see the lasting impact his leadership has brought to the Village.
New construction projects during his tenure included Carter Village Hall, the Adams Emergency Services Center, Kite and Wackerlin Lodges at Camp Suwannee, Lake Aquilla, and the Copeland Medical Center. Many other buildings were reconstructed or repurposed, the latest of these being the expansion of the Phillips Center and the new Ann & Quinton Rumph Dining Room. Most of the 109 new resident-owned homes in River Woods were built during Jim’s presidency. He was one of the key planners of the 20 Year Master Development Plan in 1987, and many of these facilities were a part of that plan.
Jim’s impact on the Village extends well beyond the physical structures he oversaw during his tenure as President and CEO. He spearheaded many advancements and innovations to services as well, including the introduction of the ACV Rehab Department and ACV Home Care Agency. (Since that time, the State of Florida has put a cap on new Home Care Agencies.) He brought in an Emergency Medical Services team to act as first responders to after-hours emergencies. ACV instated the Service Coordinator program to better plan proactively for the needs of each resident. And, under Jim’s leadership, ACV earned accreditation by CARF-CCAC, the nation’s only accrediting body for continuing care retirement communities.
It was also during Jim’s tenure that Good Samaritan Center was listed in Consumer Reports as one of the top 10% of nursing homes in the State of Florida. Additionally, a partnership was formed with Florida’s Hospital in Orlando and Florida State University College of Medicine, whereby ACV agrees to host medical students for their geriatric rotation, and in turn, professionals from FSU and Florida’s Hospital share their expertise with the Village community.
The entire Advent Christian Village community is grateful for Mr. Humbles' vision, dedication and tireless efforts to further advance the mission of Advent Christian Village. We are also pleaseed that the Humbles will continue to make Dowling Park their home.
