June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Alzheimer & Brain Awareness

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as of 2018, there are 5.7 million Americans afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. That means that approximately every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease. This disease is steadily increasing, and because there is currently no cure, it is incredibly important to spread awareness and increase the support base surrounding the fight against Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Ninety percent of what has been discovered about Alzheimer’s disease has been learned over the last 20 years, and strong support can cause even greater action. It’s important to remember that lots of small actions taken by many people can lead towards finding a cure.

Understanding Alzheimer’s — Knowing the Warning Signs

Many times, Alzheimer’s symptoms can be simply mistaken for signs of aging. Although slight memory loss and misplacing items from time to time are normal with older aging, these symptoms below are not. Being able to recognize these signs and behaviors are a vital key to an early diagnosis. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are many ways to slow the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other dementias and make the lives of those afflicted, as well as their caregivers, more comfortable. Here are five common signs of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease:

  1. Disruptive Memory Loss: One of the most common and widely known signs of Alzheimer’s disease is memory loss that interferes with daily life. Forgetting tasks such as missing appointments, forgetting to take necessary medications, etc. can be one of the first worrisome signs.
  2. Changes in Personality or Behavior: Quick and unprovoked changes in temper or behavior can be another sign of the developing disease. Those afflicted can suddenly become anxious, paranoid or scared without any cause.
  3. Problems with Speaking and Writing: People with Alzheimer’s may develop trouble following conversations or being able to contribute with complete thoughts. They might struggle to remember certain words or repeat parts of an idea over and over again.
  4. Misplacing Items: Individuals with Alzheimer’s may start leaving items in wrong or somewhat unusual locations. They might not be able to retrace their steps, and could be in danger of losing necessary or valuable items.
  5. Poor Judgment: Another sign of Alzheimer’s disease is an increase in poor judgment. You can typically see this with managing money, being more susceptible to senior scams, or even not remember to practice good hygiene.
