8 Ways To Get Outside This Spring: Outdoor Activities for Seniors

As the weather gets warmer in Florida, spring is a great time for seniors to venture outdoors, get moving and enjoy fresh air. The warmer temperatures are easier on aching joints and the sunshine can be inviting after a long (for Florida anyway) winter indoors. In addition to the mental and physical benefits of moving your body, getting outside is a great way to connect with friends and spend meaningful time together.

Ready to get outside this spring? Here are eight fun activities for seniors.

1. Walking

Getting outside doesn’t have to be complicated! Walking, whether on a nature path, a trail or just around your neighborhood, is a great way to get moving. Invite a few friends and enjoy a conversation while getting your steps in. Just drink plenty of water and use sunscreen if you’re walking during the hottest part of the day.

Benefits: Walking, along with other activities for seniors that provide light exercise, can improve cardiovascular health and enhance your mood.

2. Bird Watching

Want to get outside and enjoy God’s beautiful creation? Meet up with a friend at the local park for some bird watching. Don’t forget to pack binoculars and a journal to document your favorite birds.

Benefits: Bird watching is relaxing and can make you feel more connected with nature.

3. Gardening

Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty this spring. You can pitch in at a community garden, start one in your own yard or even plant a few indoor blooms.

Benefits: Gardening increases physical activity and can promote mental well-being.

4. Outdoor Games

Nostalgic for your favorite childhood games? They can also be played outside. Chess, checkers or Connect 4 are just as fun in the outdoors, plus cornhole is always a great way to share a laugh with friends while enjoying the spring sunshine.

Benefits: Playing games outdoors provides light physical activity, encourages friendly competition and can enhance hand-eye coordination.

5. Outdoor Concerts or Performances

Interested in jazz music, the orchestra or even live theater? Attending a performance at an outdoor amphitheater is another great way to get outdoors.

Benefits: Attending an outdoor concert provides fresh air and enrichment.

6. Photography

Are you looking for a new hobby? Outdoor photography is a great way to fit in some light walking while also expressing your creative side.

Benefits: Photography allows you to create meaningful art while enjoying the outdoors.

7. Fishing

Spring is a great time to get out on the water for some fishing! Grab a few friends, pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it.

Benefits: Fishing provides fresh air, exercise and social time with friends.

8. Pickleball

Looking for a little friendly competition? Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s low impact, which means it puts less stress on your joints, making it a great pick for seniors.
