Students, parents, Advent Christian Village employees and community members gathered at the Phillips Center on April 29 for the 28th Anniversary of the Marvin E. Jones Memorial and Forward Fund Scholarship Banquet.
Marvin E. Jones was a native to Suwannee County who went on to become the president of one of the world’s largest pipeline construction companies, Williams Brothers Overseas Company, Ltd. His interest in ACV began when his father became a resident. Marvin contributed to expanding the ministry of ACV and during his later years he directed his gifts toward an educational trust.
The banquet is made possible by the Marvin E. Jones Education Trust which greatly benefits young people of the Village and selected graduates of Suwannee High School in Live Oak, Fla.
Before the scholarship award recipients were announced, last year’s scholarship award winner, Alyssa Howard spoke to the audience about her first year experiences in college. She was encouraging to the high school seniors and provided an authentic perspective of life as a college freshman.
The Forward Fund Scholarships were presented by Craig Carter and Randy Lamb. The Forward Fund Scholarships were created by donors and go toward helping employees of ACV and their children further their education and skillset. The ACV employees who received the scholarship are Bill Ditter and Morgan Kirby.
The past scholarship award recipients were recognized as they received their renewal: Kaitlyn (Rogers) Crawford, 2016, Keverly Lee, 2017, and Alyssa Howard, 2018.
Mike and Robert Jones, sons of Marvin E. Jones, assisted Craig Carter with the scholarship awards. The Jones Brothers attend the scholarship banquet every year.
The finalists who received a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 were Tamohri Derico, Alyssa Hahn and Melissa Ernst. The second runners-up, receiving a scholarship in the amount of $2,000 over a period of two years, was Ronald Layton. The first runners-up to receive a scholarship in the amount of $3,000 over a period of two years are Kendall Butts and Marisley Leal.
The winner of the $20,000 Marvin E. Jones Scholarship 2019 is Jannette Cruz.
