Honoring Past President, Pomeroy Carter

It is with deep sadness that we announce that Pomeroy Carter, our President Emeritus, passed away at Good Samaritan Center at ACV on July 18, 2022. Yet we do not grieve as those who have no hope. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. I Thessalonians 4:16-17

Pomeroy Carter, 87, was born in Waycross, Georgia on February 14, 1935, to the late Matthew A. and Myrtle E. Carter. He graduated from Waycross High School in 1953. Pomeroy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Theology degree from Aurora College (University) in 1958 and a Master of Social Work degree from Florida State University in 1960. Pomeroy began his career at Advent Christian Village in 1958 and served here until he retired in 1995. Over his 35-plus years of leadership, ACV grew from 60 persons to over 750 residents. Only one building that was part of the campus in 1958 remained when he retired in 1995. Due to his visionary leadership, the Village became known as a model intergenerational community with comprehensive services for active retirees, frail older adults, children in need, and fractured families. Pomeroy served on a variety of local and state committees and boards including Aurora University, First National Bank of Live Oak, Barnett Bank of N. Central Florida, Florida Pepper Commission on Aging, the original State Advisory Board on Mental Health, Governor’s Committee on Aging, and University of Florida’s Center for Gerontological Studies advisory council. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Live Oak for more than 60 years.

Pomeroy was an ordained minister in the Advent Christian Church. He was an active member of the Bixler Memorial Advent Christian Church, and he served on many denominational boards and committees including the President of the Florida Conference of Advent Christian Churches. Pomeroy is survived by his wife Jerry Lynn of 63 years. Four children: Chris Carter (Kim), Kerry Harmon (Tony), Craig Carter (Vicky), and Kay Carter (June). 14 Grandchildren: Laramie Bertolino (Jamie), Will Ohms (Taylor), Matthew Carter, Daniel Harmon (Amanda), Jordan Harmon, Adam Carter (Karson), Tyler Harmon (Kaylin), Jeremiah Harmon, Timothy Carter (Shelly), Abigail Lanier (Hunter), Lindsay Carter, Emma Harmon, Anthony Harmon, Mattie Harmon. He was also blessed with 8 great-grandchildren.

If you would like to honor Pomeroy’s life and memory, in lieu of flowers the family would recommend a gift to Advent Christian Village, P.O. Box 4305 Dowling Park, FL 32064. www.acvillage.net/giving
