How to Get Started in a Senior Exercise Program

Exercise and physical activity should be a priority throughout your lifetime — and shouldn’t lessen due to aging. As you age, your body changes and certain skills like flexibility and balance can present new challenges for you to overcome. Muscle mass also decreases over time, so living a more engaged lifestyle and avoiding falling into a sedentary routine can help keep you healthy and living your life to its fullest potential. Being mobile and engaged can also help when maintaining as much independence as possible, all while keeping your body and mind healthy.

How to Find the Perfect Senior Exercise Program for You

There are many different senior exercise program options available, so don’t be intimidated by the word “exercise”. With different levels of intensity and difficulty to choose from, you’ll be able to find one perfectly suitable for your needs and abilities. Use the checklist below to ensure you’re making the most out of your experience:

Consult Your Doctor: Make sure that before you commit to any certain senior exercise program that you consult with your doctor or physician first. Communicate with them the programs you are interested in, and find out whether they will work with your physical abilities or pre-existing conditions. A checkup with your doctor can really help you understand what programs will be best for you, and you can even ask your doctor for recommendations he/she may have that could benefit you the most.

Find a Program You Enjoy: Possibly the most obvious tip is for you to find a senior exercise program that you enjoy. If you find dance and fitness fun, try getting involved in some sort of Zumba or dance group. If you want a more relaxing and calming activity, try yoga or Pilates. If you have joint pain, try swimming exercises. The best program for you will be the one that you have the most fun doing all while keeping you engaged and happy.

Try out Different Options and Start Slowly: Don’t dive into one program completely without sampling some of the other options out there. If possible, try different senior exercise programs so you can get a feeling for what you enjoy, and what is most suitable for your physical needs and abilities. After you figure out which program is best for you, start slowly and make sure you are approaching the program carefully and at a pace that is comfortable for you.

Set Clear Goals: One way to make the most out of your experience is to set clear goals for yourself. By doing this, you can create a plan, mapping out just how and when you want to accomplish your goals. You can even try recruiting some friends, family members, or even your physician to help you stick to your plan and be on your way to achieving your objectives.
