Independent Living

February is National Senior Independence Month

For most of us, maintaining our independence is a lifetime goal – no matter our age. The freedom to make our own decisions and choose a lifestyle that matters is a value that most seniors share. National Senior Independence Month is celebrated every February and is the perfect time to reflect on your individual goals for your health and wellbeing.

This Senior Independence Month, take some time to consider how to preserve your independence, now and in the future. Keep reading for a few tips on how to stay independent in your senior years.

3 Tips for Maintaining Your Independence

1. Keep Safety First – Clutter and disorganization in your home can lead to unsafe conditions and puts you at a greater risk for a fall. To help you feel more secure in your home, make sure your space is clean and organized. Keep floors and walkways clear, install adequate lighting and avoid activities that require ladders or step stools.

2. Use Technology and Assistive Devices – As technology advances, consider the ways that your phone, tablet and other electronic devices can enhance your life. Cell phones allow you to easily contact help in case of emergencies and help you stay connected to your family and friends.

Consider using a mobility device such as a cane or a walker if you have trouble getting around. An assistive mobility device can help contribute to your wellbeing and give you increased independence.

3. Stay in Touch with Your Doctor – Keep the line of communication open with your doctors when it comes to your abilities and concerns. Your healthcare provider can help you maintain your freedom through healthy lifestyle choices and support.
